Benjamin Twiggs is located in the heart of America's cherry country on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan. The area is characterized by sand dunes, small villages and rolling hills dotted with cherry blossoms in the spring and bright red fruit before harvest.
The unique character of Northern Michigan's landscape makes it ideal for growing cherries. Michigan produces about 75% of all the tart cherries and about 25% of the sweet black cherries grown in the United States.
"We feel very fortunate to be a part of this beautiful area," says Benjamin Twiggs owner Kathy Weinbrecht.
If you're planning a visit, Win and Kathy are always happy to assist visitors coming to the area. If you need directions and suggestions on things to do while "Up North" including places to enjoy a fine glass of wine, just e-mail a note to info@benjamintwiggs.com.

UPDATE ON THE HEALTH
BENEFITS OF TART CHERRIES
The cherry industry in its continuing research efforts to unlock the
health secrets of tart cherries, discovered that tart cherries are an
excellent source of compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
properties. These compounds are thought to be beneficial in protecting
against cancer, heart disease and other illnesses and may help relieve
the pain of gout and arthritis.
Specifically, the research conducted by Michigan State University
confirmed in laboratory tests that the anti-inflammatory compound in
tart cherries to be at least 10 times more active than that found in
aspirin. The signifcance is that tart cherries may not only be more
effective in controlling some forms of pain, they may do so with none of
the adverse side effects of aspirin on stomach or kidneys.
Tart cherries also contain 17 compounds with antioxidant properties.
The antioxidant activity of these tart cherry compounds, under the MSU
evaluation system, was found to be superior when compared to vitamin E
and C and some synthetic antioxidants. Two of these compounds are used
in several commercially prepared health products used to improve memory,
concentration and vision. Other research on four anthocyanins found in
tart cherry compounds indicates a potential of these properties to
inhibit the growth of colon cancer tumors.
